I love the comment about community being a net that provides some comfort amidst uncertainty. I feel like part of why COVID was so agonizing was the mass uncertainty *on top of* losing many those community buffers that usually make uncertainty easier to tolerate. Will check this book out!
I learned this from doing startups. There is so much ambiguity, even when you hit on something that works. Part of what inspired me to do one was reading about how Microsoft started with the simplest business plan - everyone should have a personal computer - then spun their wheels for four years before they hit on something that works.
I'm actually endorsing your article in the Atlantic about public pools. Years ago II took a group of underprivileged kids (is that what we call them now? They definitely didn't have many privileges) to numerous pools for fun and swimming lessons, and it was great for them.
A few years ago the one closest to home was filled in. It was a place where non - rich neighborhood kids could have good, clean, cheap fun. It was heartbreaking. Keep fighting for pools! They are an incomparable social good.
